From a friend: “Hey, all you out of towners.... Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Greetings, it’s been a long two weeks for us in Hereford and Sierra Vista. Finally, the last two days have been calm (little wind), no smoke, no fires, no controlled backfires. What a relief! Most of us that had to be evacuated are back in our homes now. Though we do know folks that lost their homes from the fire, members of Grace [church] did not. The fires came very close to about 40% of us. Members that live in town graciously opened their home to us evacuees. It was truly remarkable to see a ,loving church come together and help each other! We, the Moores, were evacuated three times! That would be true for your renters, Larry and Ellen! The first time was for the ‘small’ fire they call the Garden Fire. It wasn’t small to us because it came as close as a block away from us! Even closer to your house, Larry and Ellen! We were given 15 minutes to evacuate! That’s very scary! Because all the tankers and helicopters were fighting the big Monument Fire, they came right over and started working on the Garden Fire and were able to contain it in about 3 hours. Because we had 40-55 mile an hour winds that day, it blew over your way, Barbara, and almost jumped Buffalo Soldier Trail! WOW. We fled town and went to Sonoita, where our son, Andrew and Rachel live with their 4 kids. Then, if that wasn’t enough excitement, two days later, the 19th, the winds started kicking again and the Monument Fire got way out of control, jumped highway 92 and threatened thousands of us, including Pastor and our church building. We fled again to Sonoita. We were home for about 24 hours and found out that our area had to be evacuated again to protect us from the smoke from the backfires or controlled burns they needed to do to make a fire line to stop the fire or fires in the future from coming close to us again. Safe in Sonoita for the third time! Now, I think we’re safe but I haven’t totally unpacked. Brenda and Greg Shipman had about the most damage. The fire charred all the grass around their home but it was miraculously saved! They have a lot of soot and ash to clean up. Last Sunday, because the church building was in a mandatory evac we couldn’t meet there so the Finks had us come to their place for prayer and then a light lunch. Speaking of the Finks, they took in 6 people, 5 cats, and three goats! Anyway, were all feeling God’s love and protection as we get back to ‘normal’. Please continue to pray for all those who lost their homes and businesses. We continue to pray for you as you are away. Love, Cyndy” |
