GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK NORTH BASS TRAIL BACKPACKING TRIP INFORMATION PERMIT GRANTED JAN 30, 2006! DATES AS SHOWN BELOW! Ranger says we might have to budget an extra day to snowshoe in to the trailhead?! Maybe not this year ... Actual Permit: (page 1, page 2) ... nps is using a new form. stupid thing weighs 0.44 ounces ! Trail Description: (page 1, page 2) Approximate itinerary: Two different routes are being considered at the moment. (1) Go in and come out at Swamp Point. (2) Go in at Swamp point and come out at Lancelot Point. Lancelot Point route would add another day to the trip and is kind of an unknown at this time.
Day   Dates Location   1 Fri., Apr 28th Depart Phoenix evening of Apr 28th. Camp overnight north of Flagstaff somewhere.   2 Sat., Apr 29th Drive to Swamp Ridge Road. Leave a car here at beginning of road. Drive second car to North Bass Trail trailhead (Swamp Point). Hike to top of redwall and camp for evening.   3 Sun., Apr 30th Hike Shinumo Creek or Shinumo Camp.   4 Mon., May 1st Dayhike down to Colorado River et al.   5 Tue., May 2nd Either (1) dayhike up Shinumo and explore the Merlin/Mordred Abyss area (maybe try to make Abyss Cave), or (2) hike to Merlin/Mordred Abyss junction to camp.   6 Wed., May 3rd Either (1) hike back up to top of redwall along North Bass, or (2) hike to Abyss Cave area.   7 Thu., May 4th (1) Hike out to car at Swamp Point and drive back to Phoenix, or (2) hike to Elaine Castle area.   8 Fri., May 5th Hike out to car at beginning of Swamp Ridge Road via Lancelot Point. Drive back to Phoenix.
